Kenny Coolbeth regained his winning form as he had his Harley-Davidson Motor Company-backed XR-750 out front for the entire 25 laps on the fast Heartland Park Topeka half mile.

The small oval proved to be a challenge but Coolbeth was more than up to the task as he won his third National of the year by over two seconds over Glassman / LZ Racing’s Sammy Halbert and American Harley-Davidson / Dick Ford’s Rob Pearson.

On a night when the holeshot was imperative Coolbeth squeaked out two of them in the national. The first attempted start saw Coolbeth leading a four-wide charge with Halbert, Shaun Russell and Pearson filling out the track. In Turn 3 Jared Mees dropped his Blue Springs Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson, bringing out the red flag.

Mechanical problems sent Mees and Jake Mataya to the sidelines for the restart. The launch mirrored the first as Coolbeth led Pearson, Chris Carr Racing / Drag Specialties’ Chris Carr,
and Bartels’ Harley-Davidson / Rogers Lake Racing’s Shaun Russell.

Coolbeth slowly pulled away with Pearson and Halbert holding second and third with an excellent race behind going on for fourth between Carr, Latus Harley-Davidson / Screamin’ Eagle’s Joe Kopp and Russell.

On lap 23 of the 25-lap race Halbert got second away from Pearson and the podium was set. Moroney’s Harley-Davidson / Screamin’ Eagle’s Bryan Smith worked his way toward the front as he edged Joe Kopp for fourth place.

Russell held on to sixth over Carr and Rogers-Lake Racing’s Bryan Bigelow and Eric & Van Snedeker / Eddie Adkins’ Ricky Marshall. Thumb Motorsports / Oasis Homes’ Steve Murray rounded out the top ten finishers.

Coolbeth’s win extends his points lead to ten over Joe Kopp, who was relegated to a fifth-place finish. Bryan Smith is still in contention just 18 points behind Carr.
